Cape Town’s R300m Strandfontein Pavillion redevelopment breaks ground

Cape Town’s R300m Strandfontein Pavillion redevelopment breaks ground

Cape Town’s long-awaited redevelopment of the iconic Strandfontein Pavilion is officially underway, with a R300 million investment set to transform the historic coastal site into a modern, multi-use destination.

Geordin Hill-Lewis on Tuesday launched the flagship project along the False Bay coastline, describing it as a significant milestone for both the City and surrounding communities.

‘It’s a joy to break ground today on this flagship project. We promised we would rebuild the Strandfontein Pavilion, and now this is being fulfilled,’ the mayor said. ‘It is an emotional day seeing this come to fruition.’

Originally built in the 1980s around the largest tidal pool in the Southern Hemisphere, the Strandfontein Pavilion has long been a cherished recreational space, particularly for residents of Mitchell’s Plain and surrounding areas.

Hill-Lewis said the redevelopment was one of his early priorities in office, inspired by residents’ memories of the site.

‘This project was among my first priorities on taking office, inspired by visiting Mitchell’s Plain residents who reminisced about their childhood spent enjoying the Strandfontein Pavilion,’ he added.

According to the City, construction is already ahead of schedule, with funding brought forward in the Adjustment Budget to fast-track the start of the works.

The multi-year redevelopment will include a full upgrade of the precinct, alongside new commercial and restaurant spaces, improved safety and accessibility and enhanced public facilities.

Plans also feature a new NSRI base and boat launch ramp, indoor and outdoor event spaces, including an open-air amphitheatre, and improved beach access for people with disabilities.

City’s MMC for Community Services and Health Francine Higham said the project builds on extensive public input and aims to revitalise a key coastal landmark.

‘The Strandfontein Pavilion upgrade is not just a refurbishment – it is a catalytic investment in a key coastal node, one that honours the memories of the past, creating the foundation for many more to come,’ said Higham.

She added that the redevelopment is aligned with broader infrastructure upgrades in Mitchell’s Plain, with the goal of creating a more inclusive, vibrant and year-round destination for both residents and visitors.

Once complete, the upgraded Pavilion is expected to serve as a major recreational and event hub, reconnecting communities with one of Cape Town’s most recognisable seaside spaces.
